Types of mnemonics:
- Acronym - a word or abbreviation formed from the initial letter or letters of each of the successive parts or major parts of a compound term.
For example: Roy G. Biv is a familiar acronym for the colors in a rainbow (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).
- Acrostics - a composition usually in verse in which sets of letters (as the initial or final letters of the lines) taken in order form a word or phrase or a regular sequence of letters of the alphabet.
For example: "My Very Educated Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pizzas" would be an acrostic for the planets in order from the sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto).
- Alliteration - the repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words or syllables.
For example: Perfectionist Peter, Skinny Sally, etc. This technique would be very useful in memorizing names (something we all could do a better job of).
- Pictures - using a picture to associate two unassociated ideas.
For example: to remember the website name "memorizeinaflash", you could use a picture of a brain with a lightening bolt across it.
- Poem/Song - write a short poem to aide in memorizing.
For example: To remember when Columbus sailed to America, we've all heard the jingle "In Fourteen-hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue".
- Rhymes - one of two or more words thus corresponding in sound
For example: To remember which months have 31 days, use "Thirty days hath September/April, June and November".
